A Story of Compassion, Courage, and the Birth of a Doctor Who Wants to Cure Everything

The Drum Island Arc is one of the most emotional chapters in the East Blue–Alabasta journey. It introduces the Straw Hats’ first true medical emergency, tests their unity, and brings one of the series’ most beloved characters into the crew—Tony Tony Chopper. Beyond adventure, the arc explores themes of discrimination, hope, and the value of human kindness.

A Medical Emergency in the Harsh Winter Sea

The arc begins with a problem the Straw Hats have never faced before:
Nami falls dangerously ill.

While sailing toward Alabasta, the crew encounters severe winter weather, but something is clearly wrong—Nami collapses with a fever that worsens rapidly. This moment highlights a realistic danger of pirate life: without a doctor aboard, even small illnesses can become life-threatening.

Luffy immediately decides:
They need a doctor, no matter what.

This urgency drives the crew toward the nearest island capable of providing medical care: Drum Island, a snowy kingdom with a troubled past.

Drum Island’s Frozen Landscape and Closed Borders

When the Straw Hats arrive, they find an island completely covered in deep snow, inhabited by people struggling to rebuild their country after political turmoil. Drum Island was once ruled by Wapol, a selfish tyrant who monopolized medical care for his own benefit. Only doctors who served him were allowed to treat people—everyone else suffered.

Before the Straw Hats arrived, Wapol fled the country to escape stronger pirates, leaving Drum Island without proper leadership.

This political chaos explains why the villagers are extremely cautious when strangers arrive. But when they realize Nami’s life is in danger, their fear shifts to empathy.

They explain that only one doctor remains on the island:
Dr. Kureha, a mysterious 140-year-old woman who lives on the top of the tallest mountain — Drum Rockies.

To reach her, the Straw Hats must climb a vertical, freezing peak filled with man-eating wildlife and extreme winds.

Wapol Returns — A Foolish Tyrant

As the Straw Hats prepare to climb the mountain, a new threat emerges: Wapol has returned, determined to reclaim his lost kingdom. Wapol is both comical and dangerous. His Devil Fruit, the Baku Baku no Mi (Munch-Munch Fruit), allows him to eat anything—people, weapons, even buildings—and incorporate them into his body.

He symbolizes the abuse of power and the arrogance of corruption.
His return sets up the conflict that will test Luffy’s sense of justice.

The Harsh Climb — Luffy’s Determination

With no other option, Luffy carries Nami on his back while Sanji — injured from an earlier fight—hangs onto him as well. The climb up Drum Rockies is one of Luffy’s most selfless early acts. He battles blizzards, freezing temperatures, and giant snow rabbits called Lapins.

By the time he reaches the top, his body is nearly frozen, but he never lets go of Nami or Sanji. This moment demonstrates:

  • Luffy’s unwavering resolve
  • His loyalty to his crew
  • The sheer willpower that defines him as a captain

Meeting Dr. Kureha and Tony Tony Chopper

At the summit, Luffy meets the eccentric but brilliant doctor, Dr. Kureha, and her assistant — the blue-nosed reindeer, Chopper.

Chopper is a unique character with a tragic history. Born a reindeer with an unusual blue nose, he was rejected by his herd. After eating the Hito Hito no Mi (Human-Human Fruit), he gained the ability to talk, think, and walk like a human — which made him even more feared and isolated.

He was eventually found and cared for by Dr. Hiriluk, a quack doctor with a warm heart and an unwavering belief that “a person doesn’t die until their dreams die.”

Hiriluk’s dream was to cure the hearts of Drum Island’s people. Though his medical skill was questionable, his compassion had a lasting impact on Chopper.

Chopper and Hiriluk formed a powerful bond, like father and son.
But Hiriluk eventually died, leaving Chopper with a broken heart and a desire to become a real doctor.

Dr. Kureha took Chopper in, training him to be a skilled doctor.

Wapol’s Cruelty and Chopper’s Resolve

Wapol’s return brings chaos to the snowy kingdom, and he heads straight to Drum Rockies to reclaim his throne. His presence triggers painful memories for Chopper — the same tyrant who oppressed his mentor and inhibited all medical care on the island.

This confrontation forces Chopper to face his past.

When Wapol threatens Dr. Kureha and Drum Island once again, Chopper steps forward with courage. His unique fighting ability comes from his Rumble Balls, which allow him to transform into multiple fighting forms, each suited for different combat needs.

Chopper’s bravery here marks his evolution from a frightened, lonely child to a doctor who is willing to fight for others.

Luffy vs. Wapol — A Fight for Drum Island

When Wapol tries to destroy Dr. Kureha’s castle and do harm again, Luffy steps in. Their battle is both comedic and symbolic. Luffy dismisses Wapol’s authority completely, showing how irrelevant tyrants become when faced with someone who fights for freedom and friendship.

Ultimately, Luffy defeats Wapol, sending him flying off the island and liberating Drum Island permanently.

For the first time in years, the people of Drum Island can breathe freely.

Chopper Joins the Crew — A New Dream Begins

After the battle, Dr. Kureha reveals the truth about Hiriluk’s last wish:
He wanted Chopper to sail the world, help people, and chase his dream.

Chopper, afraid of rejection, hesitates to join the Straw Hats. But Luffy doesn’t hesitate for a second — he wants Chopper as the crew’s doctor.

Chopper finally accepts, tears running down his face, as he steps onto the Going Merry.

A new chapter of his dream begins.
